Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi has announced the installation of cameras inside trains to improve monitoring and overall camera safety across Pakistan Railways. The move is part of a broader initiative to enhance passenger security and reduce accidents nationwide.
While briefing the media on Pakistan Railways’ performance, Minister Abbasi said the department generated over Rs. 93 billion in revenue in 2025. He added that Rs. 50 billion is expected in the first half of FY 2025–26. If projections hold, the railways will surpass Rs. 1 trillion in revenue for the first time by the end of the fiscal year.
The minister highlighted that the Safety Department has been upgraded to a directorate, which has successfully lowered accident rates from 0.09 percent to 0.04 percent. He noted that no serious railway accidents have occurred since the directorate’s establishment.
Rawalpindi Railway Station has been developed as Pakistan’s first smart railway station, equipped with cameras and a modern security system. Following this, other major stations will also be upgraded under the smart station project in 2026. Additionally, all trains will receive camera installations, reinforcing camera safety for passengers throughout the country.
Abbasi said eight train rakes, including Shalimar, Pak Business, Lasani, and Faiz Ahmed Faiz, were upgraded in eight months. All remaining trains are scheduled to be modernized by December 2026. The upgrades also include digitized railway operations, computerized staff attendance, and improved station facilities, such as ATMs, ticket vending machines, and POS systems.
