5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Surrounding Areas

ISLAMABAD — A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and nearby regions on Monday, causing panic among residents. The tremors were also felt in Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza, and other adjacent areas.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake had its epicenter in Southeast Kashmir. The tremors occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which amplified the shaking experienced in the affected regions.

Residents rushed out of buildings and homes as a precaution, fearing potential aftershocks. Social media quickly filled with reports from eyewitnesses describing the intense shaking. Despite the panic, authorities confirmed that no damages or casualties have been reported so far.

Seismologists advised people to remain calm but stay alert for possible aftershocks. They recommended avoiding staying near walls, heavy furniture, or structures that could collapse in the event of further tremors.

Local authorities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi monitored the situation and ensured emergency services were on standby. Hospitals were informed to be ready for any injuries, though no casualties have yet been recorded.

Experts noted that the region is prone to seismic activity due to tectonic movements in the Kashmir area. While this earthquake caused fear, it serves as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness, especially in urban centers.

Residents are urged to follow safety protocols, including assembling in open areas and keeping emergency supplies ready. Authorities emphasized that staying calm and following guidance can minimize risks during seismic events.

The government and disaster management teams continue to monitor the situation closely. Citizens are advised to report any structural damages or injuries immediately.
