LAHORE โ The Punjab government has started a citywide campaign to install safety rods on motorcycles ahead of the Basant festival. The move aims to protect riders from dangerous kite strings during the annual celebrations.
The campaign was launched at Azadi Chowk, with Commissioner Maryam Khan, Lahore CCPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana, and CTO Dr Athar Waheed overseeing the installation process. A road safety camp at Yadgar Road offered free safety rods to motorcyclists.
Officials warned that motorcycles without safety rods would not be allowed on city roads during Basant. Commissioner Khan confirmed that kite flying will be restricted to Lahore district only on February 6, 7, and 8, and flying before these dates is strictly prohibited.
In addition, the Punjab Higher Education Department directed public colleges and universities to provide buses and drivers during the three days of Basant celebrations. This initiative is part of the โSafe Basantโ plan, which aims to ease traffic congestion and ensure public safety during the festival.
Authorities also announced that kite and string sales will be allowed only from February 1 to 8. Production will be limited to Lahore, and only registered sellers with valid NOCs will be permitted to operate. Licensing is being managed online through the โe-Bizโ portal.
CTO Dr Athar Waheed stated that approximately 100 road safety camps have been set up across Lahore. He added that 50,000 to 60,000 motorcycles are being fitted with safety rods daily, with over one million rods expected to be installed before Basant.
Police officials emphasized strict enforcement, warning against violations like aerial firing and unsafe kite flying. The coordinated effort between the district administration, police, and other departments aims to ensure a safe and regulated festival.
