Pepsi Supplier Sealed in Islamabad Over Use of Fungus-Infested Sugar

ISLAMABAD โ€“ Pepsi has long been considered a popular beverage choice in Pakistan. However, a recent enforcement action in the capital has raised serious concerns about food safety and regulatory compliance.

The Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) has sealed two major beverage facilities operating in the city. These include Haideri Beverages and Beverages Plus, which serve as the main distributors of Pepsi products in Islamabad. The action followed a surprise inspection that uncovered multiple violations posing risks to public health.

According to official sources, the raid was conducted in Humak Model Town. The operation was carried out by the IFA in coordination with the ICT Assistant Commissioner. Authorities acted on intelligence reports suggesting unsafe manufacturing and storage practices at the facilities.

During the inspection, officials allegedly found expired sugar being used in the production of Pepsi and other soft drinks. Some of the sugar was also found to be fungus-contaminated. Inspectors described the situation as alarming and dangerous for consumers.

The inspection team documented four major violations. Officials said the companies ignored previous warnings issued by the Food Authority. This showed a continued failure to comply with food safety regulations.

Investigators discovered nearly 150 sugar bags with altered expiry dates. This indicated possible deliberate mislabeling. In addition, cockroach infestation was observed on several sugar bags. Large quantities of sugar were also stored directly on the floor, which violates hygiene standards.

To determine the level of contamination, IFA staff collected two samples of spilled sugar. These samples were sent for laboratory testing. Until the results are received, authorities have taken strict preventive measures.

In total, 54,874 sugar bags were sealed at both facilities. Entire warehouses were shut down. All production, sales, and procurement activities were suspended immediately. Officials stated that operations will remain halted until further notice.

Authorities also revealed that the expired sugar alone is worth millions of rupees. This highlights the large scale of the violation and the potential impact on consumer safety.

So far, Pepsi has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Officials said the situation remains under review. Further updates are expected once laboratory results are finalized or an official response is received.
