Russian Attacks Hit Ukraine’s Largest Cities

Russia launched coordinated attacks on Ukraine’s two largest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv, early on Saturday. Officials reported one person killed and at least 15 others injured.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one death occurred in the capital, with four people injured. Three of the injured were hospitalized. Fires broke out in districts on both sides of the Dnipro River, causing disruptions in heating and water supplies in parts of the city.

Ukraine’s air force confirmed that drones and missiles were used in the attacks. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, reported strikes in at least four districts, including damage to a medical facility.

Kyiv has already experienced two major overnight attacks since the New Year, which knocked out power and heating in hundreds of buildings. Emergency crews are still working to restore services, with temperatures dropping to minus 13 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight.

In Kharkiv, located about 30 km from the Russian border, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that 25 drones struck several districts over two and a half hours. At least 11 people were injured. The drones hit a dormitory for displaced people, a hospital, and a maternity hospital.

These latest attacks come after the first day of talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States in the United Arab Emirates. Negotiators aim to find a resolution to the nearly four-year-long conflict.

Authorities in both cities urged residents to follow safety protocols and stay alert as recovery and damage assessments continue. Kyiv and Kharkiv remain on high alert for further threats, and emergency services are coordinating repairs and humanitarian aid.
