Mother Dies After Falling into Open Drain in Lahore, Search Continues for Missing Baby

A tragic incident has shaken Lahore after a young woman lost her life near the historic Data Darbar area. Her 10-month-old baby remains missing, despite ongoing rescue efforts. The incident has raised serious concerns about public safety and administrative oversight in the city.

According to officials, the body of the 24-year-old woman was recovered almost three kilometers away near Outfall Road. Rescue 1122 retrieved the body after an extensive search operation. The search for the infant is still underway. Multiple agencies are working continuously to trace the missing child.

DIG Operations Lahore, Faisal Kamran, confirmed that all available resources have been deployed. He stated that rescue teams are operating around the clock. Authorities are treating the matter as extremely sensitive due to the missing baby.

CCTV footage supported the statement given by the womanโ€™s husband. He told police that the family had gone to Data Darbar to offer prayers. The footage confirmed their movement before the incident. Safe City Lahore officials secured all relevant video evidence from nearby cameras.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took immediate notice of the incident. She ordered the formation of a high-level inquiry committee. The committee is headed by the Additional Chief Secretary. It has been instructed to submit its findings within 24 hours.

Following her directives, disciplinary action was taken against several officials. TEPA Director Shabbir Hussain was suspended. Project Director Zahid Abbas and Deputy Director Shabbir Ahmed were also removed from their posts. The suspensions were due to alleged negligence and failure to perform duties.

Earlier, rescue officials had questioned the initial drowning claims. They stated that drowning at the alleged sewer point was technically impossible. The area near Bird Market, close to Data Darbar, had undergone maintenance work. Authorities said the sewer line inspection showed no accident occurred at that spot.

Rescue officials added that visibility was low due to darkness at the time. Specialized teams and divers reached the location within minutes. Despite swift action, the baby could not be located.

Eyewitnesses shared that the family had been out for a walk earlier. They visited Minar-e-Pakistan before reaching Data Darbar. The woman and her baby were reportedly sitting near an open drain. Both allegedly fell in during the incident.
