Spotify to Introduce Group Messaging Feature in Its App

Spotify is set to enhance its in-app messaging by adding group chat support. The move is part of its effort to transition from a music-streaming platform to a more social experience.

The update follows last year’s release of individual messaging on Spotify. With group messaging, users can now connect more easily with friends, share music, and engage with fellow music enthusiasts in one conversation.

Currently, messaging on Spotify is limited to users you’ve interacted with through the platform’s social features. Starting conversations with new users requires invite links, making interaction less intuitive.

One of the main challenges for users is finding others on Spotify. Users cannot search by unique usernames, and searching by display name is often unreliable. Many users can share the same name, which complicates connecting with others.

Version 9.1.20.1132 of Spotify’s Android app hints that the company may soon allow users to edit their usernames. This change could simplify interactions and make Spotify’s social features more user-friendly.

Since 2018, Spotify has relied on auto-generated alphanumeric usernames. While functional, these usernames are not easy to remember or share. Editable usernames will allow users to treat their handles like social media profiles, improving communication and connection on the platform.

The addition of group chat is a significant upgrade for Spotify. It aligns with the company’s broader strategy of becoming a social hub, not just a music streaming service. Users will be able to share music, ideas, and conversations in a more interactive and organized way.

Although Spotify has not provided a specific release date for these features, the updates indicate a major step in its evolution. By improving messaging and making usernames more user-friendly, Spotify is making it easier for users to interact and form communities.
