Millions Stolen in Bold Karachi Heist Targeting Electric Company Employees

KARACHI: Armed robbers struck in Saddar on Friday, looting Rs 8 million from two employees of an electric company. The incident highlights growing lawlessness in Karachi.

According to police, Salman, an employee of the electric company near Native Jetty Bridge in West Wharf, had sent two employees to withdraw 8 million rupees from Meezan Bank in Keamari. The employees reached the branch around 4:00 pm but were told that the bank did not have sufficient cash. They were advised to visit Meezan Bankโ€™s Panorama Centre branch in Saddar instead.

The employees completed the withdrawal at the Panorama Centre branch near Atrium Mall by 5:30 pm and carried the 8 million rupees in a black bag. As they were approaching Ruby Jewellers traffic signal on Zeb-un-Nissa Street, two armed men on a motorcycle intercepted them, brandished guns, and stole the cash before fleeing the scene. The robbers were reportedly wearing shalwar kameez and appeared to be between 35 to 40 years old.

Acting SHO Preedy, Inspector Shah Faisal Khan, confirmed that a case has been registered against the unknown suspects. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify and track the robbers.

Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho has taken notice of the incident and requested a detailed report from the Additional Inspector General of Police, Karachi. He instructed authorities to use all available resources, including modern technology, to apprehend the criminals quickly.

The incident raises concerns over the security of cash withdrawals and the safety of employees handling large sums of money in Karachi. Citizens are calling for stricter measures and increased police patrolling in high-risk areas.
