Justice Agha Faisal to Lead Judicial Probe into Karachi’s Gul Plaza Fire

Justice Agha Faisal has been appointed to head a judicial commission to investigate the Gul Plaza Fire in Karachi. The decision was made by the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court on Wednesday.

According to an official letter, the chief justice nominated Justice Agha Faisal to lead the inquiry. The letter was sent by the Registrar of the Sindh High Court to the provincial Home Department. It confirmed the formation of a single-member judicial commission for the Gul Plaza Fire probe.

The commission will investigate the circumstances that led to the Gul Plaza Fire. It will also determine the causes of the blaze and identify any responsible parties. Officials said the commission’s tenure and terms of reference would be announced separately by the Sindh government.

The move comes after strong demands for a judicial inquiry into the incident. The MQM had earlier called for a transparent investigation into the deadly fire. The Sindh government then decided to form a judicial commission and requested the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court to nominate a judge.

Before the judicial commission was announced, the Sindh Cabinet had set up a committee to review the incident. The committee was tasked with examining the events that led to the tragedy and the safety conditions in the building.

The Gul Plaza Fire was one of the deadliest incidents in the city. Reports said between 2,000 and 2,500 people were inside the building when the fire broke out. The blaze caused heavy casualties and raised serious concerns about fire safety measures.

The new judicial commission is expected to conduct a detailed inquiry. It will review available evidence, hear statements from witnesses, and study official reports. The findings will help authorities understand what went wrong and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.

Officials hope the investigation will bring clarity to the incident. The commission’s report may also lead to policy changes and stricter safety regulations across the province.
