Arson Case 30 JI Workers Remanded, One Hospitalized During Court Hearing

An Arson Case involving Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) activists took a new turn on Monday as an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) sent 30 party members to jail on judicial remand. The activists were presented in connection with arson, vandalism, and damage to government property.

The police prosecutor requested physical remand, citing significant losses caused to state assets. However, the JI counsel opposed the request, arguing that the First Information Report (FIR) lacked evidence of terrorism-related acts. Counsel noted that although firing was reported, no weapons were recovered from the site. He emphasized that protesting is a fundamental right and asked the court to drop the terrorism charges.

During the hearing, one activist’s health worsened, and he was shifted to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) for treatment.

The Arson Case was initially registered at Aram Bagh police station after the JI staged a sit-in in the red zone. Charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act include rioting, violence, interference in government duties, and violation of Section 144. The FIR states that 300 to 325 activists participated, with inflammatory speeches escalating the protest into rioting and violence.

Police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse protesters near the Sindh Assembly on Saturday evening, arresting at least 10 activists. JI Karachi Chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman had announced the sit-in, and tensions rose when protesters tried to reach the Assembly by removing barricades.

Clashes erupted as protesters and police exchanged stones, resulting in injuries on both sides. Media personnel covering the event were also affected due to intense tear gas shelling. Additionally, police seized the JI sound system truck and took it to the station.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement and political groups in Karachi. Authorities stressed maintaining public order, while JI leaders argued that their protest was peaceful and their rights were being curtailed.
