OpenAI Plans AI-Powered Smart Devices, Including Speaker and Glasses

OpenAI is reportedly developing a new line of AI-powered devices. The company has over 200 employees working on the project, according to a report by The Information.

The first device is expected to be a smart speaker. Sources say it could cost between $200 and $300. However, the speaker may not launch until February 2027 at the earliest. The device will feature a camera to capture information about users and their surroundings.

In addition to the speaker, OpenAI is also working on smart glasses. These glasses are not expected to reach mass production before 2028. The company is exploring ways to integrate AI and augmented reality into wearable devices.

OpenAI entered the hardware market after acquiring Jony Iveโ€™s startup, io Products, for $6.5 billion. Jony Ive is the former designer for Apple. The acquisition aims to help OpenAI expand into physical AI products and AR technology.

Other tech companies are also investing in smart glasses and AI devices. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has launched Ray-Ban smart glasses. These allow users to record, take pictures, and stream content using small cameras. Apple and Google are also reportedly developing their own smart glasses.

The move into hardware marks a significant expansion for OpenAI. The company is best known for ChatGPT, its popular AI chatbot. By creating devices with cameras and AI features, OpenAI hopes to bring its software capabilities into everyday physical products.

Experts say AI-powered devices could transform how people interact with technology at home and on the go. OpenAIโ€™s smart speaker could compete with existing smart speakers while offering new AI-driven features. The glasses and other devices could further bridge the gap between software and the physical world.

OpenAI has not publicly commented on the report. However, the companyโ€™s growing hardware efforts signal a broader strategy to combine AI software with physical devices, positioning itself as a major player in the emerging AI-powered hardware market.
