KARACHI โ Meta has rolled out a new update for WhatsApp Beta on Android, version 2.26.7.8, through the Google Play Beta Program. The latest WhatsApp update hints at a new password protection feature designed to strengthen account security.
According to reports, WhatsApp is working on an option that will allow users to set a dedicated account password. This password will be alphanumeric and must contain between six and 20 characters. At least one letter and one number will be required.
The new WhatsApp security feature aims to add an extra layer of protection beyond the current two-step verification system. Users will receive feedback about the strength of their chosen password. They will also be able to change or remove it at any time.
The primary goal of this update is to reduce the risk of account hijacking. Even if someone gains access to a six-digit verification code through SIM swapping or device compromise, the attacker would still need the account password. This makes unauthorized access more difficult.
According to WABetaInfo, the account password will always be required after entering the standard six-digit verification code during login. If a user has set a password but has not enabled two-step verification, WhatsApp will ask for the account password directly.
If two-step verification is active, the login process will involve two steps. First, the user must enter the 2FA PIN. After that, the account password will be required. This dual requirement significantly improves account safety.
Currently, WhatsApp users can protect their accounts with two-step verification. This includes setting a PIN and adding an email address for recovery. The new password feature will build on these existing protections.
Security experts say the move reflects WhatsAppโs continued focus on user privacy and digital safety. With rising cases of online fraud and SIM swapping, stronger authentication measures are becoming essential.
The feature is still under development and is not yet available to all users. Beta testers may receive early access before a wider rollout. Users are encouraged to keep their WhatsApp app updated to benefit from future security improvements.
