An Indian citizen, Karnail Singh, has moved LHC seeking annulment of his wife Sarabjit Kaur’s marriage in Pakistan. He claims she was forcibly converted and married after arriving on a 10-day pilgrimage visa in November 2025.
Singh appointed former MPA Mahinder Pal Singh to represent him in Pakistan and file the petition. The petitioner argued that his wife was allegedly blackmailed with objectionable photographs and coerced into conversion before her marriage.
Under the Hindu Marriage Act, Singh contends that conversion does not automatically dissolve a prior marriage. He added that Sarabjit Kaur falsely declared herself “divorced” in her Pakistani marriage certificate, despite no court decree of divorce existing.
Singh has requested the court to annul the marriage and order the deportation of Sarabjit Kaur once her visa expires. He also seeks legal action against her Pakistani husband for allegedly forcing her into marriage through coercion and blackmail.
The Registrar’s Office of the Lahore High Court has raised objections to the petition. Officials noted that the special power of attorney submitted was not attested by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They also pointed out that Singh had not approached the proper forum to cancel the marriage.
Justice Farooq Haider is scheduled to hear the matter. The court will consider both the objections and the legal grounds cited by Singh in his petition.
Legal experts say that the case highlights challenges in cross-border marital disputes and forced conversion allegations. They note that the court will carefully examine documentation, visa regulations, and the validity of the marriage under Pakistani law.
Singh has formally moved LHC as the primary legal step to protect his rights and seek justice. Observers say the case may set a precedent for handling similar disputes involving foreign nationals and alleged forced conversions.
The petition and objections are expected to be reviewed in detail during the next hearing, with the court likely to issue directions regarding verification of claims and legal procedures.
Overall, Karnail Singh’s decision to move LHC reflects growing concerns about cross-border marital disputes and emphasizes the role of the judiciary in resolving sensitive cases.
