Pakistanโs airline industry is facing steep financial pressure as jet fuel prices surge, prompting airlines to add fuel surcharges on air tickets.
Jet fuel rates have jumped from Rs176 per liter to Rs417 per liter this month, an increase of more than 34 percent. Some carriers report that actual fuel costs have risen by up to 70 percent, forcing them to pass these expenses to passengers.
Airlines insist that base fares remain unchanged, but fuel surcharges now make air tickets significantly more expensive.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has added a $10 surcharge on domestic air tickets. International flights see higher charges: $100 for Canada, $75 for the UK, and $50 for Saudi Arabia and other Gulf destinations. Private carriers have imposed surcharges ranging from $15 to $150, depending on the route.
Officials in the aviation sector explained that the spike in air tickets is due to rising global fuel prices and the temporary closure of Gulf airspaces. They noted that operating flights without surcharges is no longer financially viable.
Passengers are now facing higher costs, with the price of air tickets rising sharply across all airlines. Travel agencies have warned that further increases in jet fuel could lead to additional surcharges in the coming months.
Despite the rising fares, airlines have urged travelers to continue booking air tickets, assuring them that flights remain safe and reliable. Airlines are also exploring cost-cutting measures to minimize the financial burden on passengers while maintaining regular schedules.
Experts suggest travelers compare air tickets across different carriers, as surcharges vary depending on the airline and route. They also advise booking early to avoid sudden increases in charges due to ongoing fuel price fluctuations.
The aviation industry continues to navigate these challenges, highlighting the direct link between global energy markets and local air ticket prices.
Air travelers are advised to stay updated on airline announcements as surcharges on air tickets may change with fuel price trends.
This marks one of the most significant increases in air tickets in recent years, reflecting broader economic pressures on Pakistanโs transport sector.
