ISLAMABAD: The federal government is reviewing a new plan under which Markets to close at 8:00 PM across Pakistan. The proposal aims to reduce electricity usage during the ongoing energy crisis.
According to reports, officials have started consultations with all four provinces. Authorities are also in talks with Gilgit-Baltistan. The goal is to develop a coordinated energy-saving strategy amid rising power costs and regional pressures.
Sources from the Ministry of Energy said the proposal suggests new operating hours for businesses. Under this plan, shops, bazaars, and commercial areas will open at 9:00 AM. These areas will follow a fixed closing time, meaning Markets to close by 8:00 PM nationwide.
The proposal also includes revised timings for the hospitality sector. Restaurants and hotels may be allowed to operate until 10:00 PM. Officials believe this balance will support both energy conservation and business needs.
To ensure effective implementation, the government has asked for input from key stakeholders. Provincial governments, chambers of commerce, and trade bodies have been invited to share their feedback. Their suggestions will help shape the final policy.
In addition, the government has collected energy usage data from all power distribution companies. This data will help estimate how much electricity can be saved if Markets to close earlier than usual. Officials are analyzing these figures to measure the plan’s impact.
The proposed policy is not permanent at this stage. It is expected to be introduced for an initial period of two months. During this time, authorities will monitor its effectiveness and response from the public and business community.
