WASHINGTON: US President Trump has said that Iran is preparing to present a proposal aimed at meeting American demands. The comments come as diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in Pakistan.
Speaking in a phone interview with Reuters, Trump said, “They’re making an offer and we’ll have to see.” He did not share further details about the proposal.
Trump added that he is still unsure what the offer will include. However, he repeated his key conditions for any possible agreement.
He has consistently demanded that Iran give up its enriched uranium. He also wants freedom of oil movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
US officials said special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to travel to Islamabad on Saturday. They are expected to hold discussions with an Iranian delegation.
The talks are seen as part of broader efforts to restart peace negotiations between the two sides. The meetings are expected to take place in the Pakistani capital.
On Thursday, Trump also raised concerns about Iran’s leadership structure. He suggested that internal divisions may be affecting decision-making in Tehran.
When asked who the US is currently speaking with, Trump avoided giving direct names. He said, “I don’t want to say that, but we’re dealing with the people that are in charge now.”
He did not provide further clarification on the individuals involved in the talks.
According to earlier reports, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was expected in Islamabad. He is believed to be discussing proposals aimed at restarting negotiations with Washington.
Trump has also maintained a firm position on military pressure. He stated that US forces will continue restrictions linked to Iran’s maritime access until a deal is reached.
When asked what would be required to lift the restrictions, Trump said he would need more information. He explained that decisions depend on the details of Iran’s offer.
He said, “I’d have to be able to answer that question later. I have to see what they’re offering.”
