The Punjab government is considering announcing early Summer Vacations for schools and colleges due to rising temperatures and weather warnings across the province. Officials say the proposal is currently under discussion and a final decision is expected soon.
Punjab Minister for School and Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat said the government is reviewing a plan to begin Summer Vacations in educational institutions from May 22. According to the proposal, holidays could continue until August 2.
Speaking to the media, the minister stated that a final announcement regarding Summer Vacations would likely be made by May 11. He added that authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions before making the decision.
The discussion comes after the Punjab Disaster Management Authority warned about above-normal temperatures and changing weather patterns in the province over the coming months.
According to officials, Punjab may face intense heatwaves, heavy rainfall, urban flooding, and windstorms during the summer season. Weather experts have also warned about dust storms and hailstorms in different regions.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department stated that rising temperatures could particularly affect plain areas of Punjab. Authorities fear that severe heat conditions may create health risks for students attending schools during extreme weather.
Officials also believe changing weather conditions may impact crops, orchards, and vegetables in several districts. Heatwave conditions are expected to become more severe during May and June.
During the discussion, the education minister also revealed that the government is considering organizing summer camps during the holidays. However, no final decision has been announced regarding the proposed camps.
Parents and students are closely following updates related to Summer Vacations as temperatures continue rising in many cities. Several social media users have already urged authorities to announce early holidays to protect children from extreme heat.
Last year, the Punjab government had announced Summer Vacations from May 28 to August 14. However, the holidays were later extended until August 31 because of severe weather conditions and high temperatures.
Educational experts say early vacations can help reduce health risks for students during heatwaves. They also suggest schools should improve heat safety measures and emergency response plans during extreme weather periods.
The Punjab government is expected to consult weather experts and disaster management officials before issuing the final notification. Authorities say student safety remains the top priority while reviewing the schedule for Summer Vacations this year.
