The Government of Pakistan has introduced a new digital initiative called “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” to improve transparency in electricity billing across the country. The mobile application allows consumers to submit their own electricity meter readings directly through their smartphones.
The project has been launched under the supervision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. It was developed by the Power Information Technology Company (PITC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy’s Power Division.
The main purpose of the app is to reduce complaints related to overbilling and incorrect meter readings. Through the new system, users can upload a picture of their electricity meter on the scheduled meter-reading date. This process is expected to make billing more accurate and transparent.
To begin using the service, consumers first need to download the application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. After installation, users must register their Consumer ID details within the app.
On the assigned meter-reading day, consumers can take a clear photo of their electricity meter and upload it before the deadline. Officials say this step will help ensure that bills are generated according to the actual reading submitted by the user.
The government says the Apna Meter initiative is designed to give consumers more control over the billing process. Authorities believe the app can also reduce delays and human errors that sometimes occur during manual meter readings.
According to official information, the application offers several benefits for electricity consumers. These include protection from overbilling, improved accuracy in meter readings, and quicker submission of meter data.
Officials also stated that the digital platform will increase public trust in the electricity billing system. Consumers will have a direct way to verify and share their readings without depending entirely on meter readers.
The launch of Apna Meter is part of the government’s wider “Uraan Pakistan” programme. The initiative focuses on expanding digital public services and improving facilities for citizens through technology-based solutions.
