Pakistan Pushes for Early Launch of Direct Flights to the US, Says Naqvi

Pakistan is seeking the early launch of Direct Flights between Pakistan and the United States, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said during a high-level meeting with senior US officials on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry, Naqvi held talks with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur. The meeting focused on bilateral relations, regional developments, and cooperation in several important sectors.

US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A Baker, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, and other senior officials also attended the discussions.

During the meeting, Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan and the United States share a relationship based on mutual trust and cooperation. He added that ties between the two countries have strengthened in recent years.

The interior minister also stressed the importance of restoring and expanding Direct Flights between Pakistan and the US. Officials believe the move could improve travel convenience, business activity, and people-to-people connections between both nations.

Naqvi and Paul Kapur also discussed cooperation in security, counterterrorism, and counternarcotics operations. The interior minister assured the US side that security arrangements for American companies working on the Reko Diq project had been fully ensured.

The meeting also included discussions about the current situation in the Middle East. Mohsin Naqvi stated that Pakistan supports peaceful solutions and remains hopeful for lasting regional stability.

In response, Paul Kapur praised Pakistan’s efforts for promoting peace and security in the region.

The discussion on Direct Flights comes after Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) resumed direct flight operations to London earlier this year after a six-year suspension.

PIA announced on March 29 that its first direct flight departed from Islamabad to London. The airline also confirmed plans to operate direct services from Lahore to London.

Earlier, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had also spoken about the revival of Pakistan’s aviation sector. He stated that the government was working to expand PIA’s fleet and restore its network of international routes.

The defence minister said Pakistan is coordinating closely with US aviation authorities to restart Direct Flights to the United States. He expressed hope that the aviation sector would continue improving following reforms and international recognition.

Experts believe restoring direct air links with the US could provide major benefits for Pakistani travellers, overseas Pakistanis, and businesses. Many passengers currently rely on connecting flights through Gulf countries and Europe.

Officials say improved aviation cooperation may also strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Pakistan and the United States in the future.
