China Launches First General-Purpose Household Robot for Daily Home Tasks

China has officially introduced its first general-purpose household robot, named Shiguang S1, in Wuhanโ€™s Optics Valley. The launch marks a major step in the countryโ€™s growing robotics and artificial intelligence sector.

The robot was unveiled by GigaBrain on May 20. Unlike traditional industrial robots, the Shiguang S1 is designed specifically for home use. The company said the robot can assist families with everyday household activities while also interacting naturally with people.

China Launches the Shiguang S1 as part of its broader push toward advanced AI-powered technology. The robot is built to handle common tasks that people usually perform at home. According to GigaBrain, the machine can fold clothes, prepare meals, and clean dining tables. It can also communicate with elderly family members and provide assistance around the house.

One of the key features of the Shiguang S1 is its learning ability. The robot can adapt to new situations and improve its performance over time. This makes it different from older robots that only follow fixed commands and perform limited functions.

GigaBrain explained that the robot operates using the companyโ€™s self-developed embodied intelligent model. The system helps the robot understand different environments and respond accordingly. It also allows the machine to make decisions and plan actions independently inside the home.

Ye Yun, Vice President of Research and Development at GigaBrain, said factory robots are usually programmed with fixed instructions. He explained that the Shiguang S1 can respond more intelligently to changing situations and perform tasks with greater flexibility.

China Launches this robot at a time when countries worldwide are investing heavily in artificial intelligence and smart automation. The company also confirmed plans to release its next-generation GigaBrain 1 model in the third quarter of 2026.

Safety remains an important focus for the developers. The Shiguang S1 includes a compliant control mechanism designed to reduce accidents. If the robot accidentally touches a person or pet while moving, it immediately stops to prevent injury.
