Pakistan, China Advance CPEC 2.0 With Focus on Connectivity, Energy and Investment

Pakistan and China have agreed to accelerate work on CPEC 2.0 with a renewed focus on connectivity, energy cooperation, trade, and investment. The decision was made during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s four-day official visit to Beijing, where he held high-level meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

During the meetings, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic relations and expanding economic cooperation under the upgraded CPEC 2.0 framework. Officials described the long-standing friendship between Pakistan and China as a “rock-solid strategic asset” capable of facing changing global challenges.

The visit concluded with a detailed joint statement outlining a broader roadmap for future cooperation. Discussions covered several important areas, including infrastructure, artificial intelligence, regional diplomacy, security, and counterterrorism cooperation.

One of the key outcomes of the talks was the agreement to push forward the “high-quality development” of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Both sides emphasized that CPEC 2.0 would not only focus on infrastructure but would also support regional trade, industrial growth, and economic integration.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan remained committed to deepening ties with China and turning the corridor into a wider platform for regional development. Chinese leaders also expressed support for Pakistan’s economic and development goals.

Pakistan and China agreed to invite third-party countries and investors to participate in selected CPEC projects through mutually agreed arrangements. Analysts believe this step could increase international investment and strengthen regional economic partnerships.

The two countries also decided to convene a meeting of the CPEC Joint Cooperation Committee at the earliest opportunity. Officials said the meeting would help accelerate ongoing projects and finalize future plans.

Connectivity projects remained a major focus during the discussions. Both countries agreed to continue work on the phased realignment of the Karakoram Highway between Thakot and Raikot to improve trade and transportation links.

Gwadar Port was once again highlighted as a central part of future regional trade plans. Pakistan and China pledged to develop Gwadar into a major logistics and connectivity hub linking South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

The two sides also agreed to maximize the use of the Khunjerab Pass to strengthen land connectivity and cross-border trade between both countries.

Observers described the visit as an important diplomatic and economic development for the region. Experts believe the expansion of CPEC 2.0 could improve investment opportunities, regional integration, and long-term economic growth for Pakistan and neighboring countries.

Both countries also stressed the importance of cooperation in emerging sectors, including technology and sustainable development. Officials said future projects would focus on modern infrastructure, clean energy, and smart economic planning.
