Canada has introduced New Rules for digital nomads entering the country under a work-permit exemption category. The updated instructions mark a major change from the previous relaxed policy for remote workers.
The new guidelines were published on May 26, 2026, on the website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Immigration officers have also received updated instructions titled โTemporary residents: Digital nomads.โ
Under the previous system, digital nomads were not required to provide extra documents beyond standard visitor requirements. However, the New Rules now require stronger proof related to income and employment.
According to the updated policy, digital nomads must provide documents showing that their income comes entirely from outside Canada. Applicants must also prove they work remotely for a foreign employer or operate a self-employed business serving clients outside Canada.
Canadian immigration authorities define digital nomads as remote workers who are either self-employed or employed by foreign companies. These individuals can enter Canada as visitors and work remotely for up to six months without a work permit.
Officials clarified that digital nomads are exempt from work permits because they are not considered part of the Canadian labour market. However, the New Rules stress that applicants must satisfy immigration officers that they will not work for Canadian employers unless they qualify under another exemption category.
The updated instructions also include additional conditions for visitors planning longer stays. Digital nomads who wish to remain in Canada beyond their approved period must apply for a visitor record before their status expires.
Family members accompanying digital nomads must also apply separately for their own temporary resident status. Immigration officers will review each application individually.
Standard visitor requirements will still apply to all applicants. Digital nomads must show they can financially support themselves during their stay in Canada. They must also convince officers that they will leave the country after their authorized stay ends.
Applicants must also meet medical and criminal admissibility requirements before approval.
