The Karachi Traffic Police have introduced a new e-challan system to tackle lane violations on Sharea Faisal. The initiative officially came into effect on June 1 as part of efforts to improve traffic management and road discipline in the city.
According to a traffic police spokesperson, motorists who commit lane violations on the busy roadway will now receive electronic challans. The system will use existing surveillance cameras to monitor traffic and automatically detect rule breakers.
Authorities have urged citizens to follow lane discipline at all times. Drivers of all vehicle categories, including motorcycles, buses, rickshaws, and private cars, have been instructed to remain within their designated lanes while traveling on Sharea Faisal.
The project is part of a broader traffic reform plan introduced by DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah. Officials say the objective is to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and minimize accidents caused by improper lane usage.
Under the new traffic arrangement, motorcycles, buses, rickshaws, and other light transport vehicles must use the two left-most lanes. The remaining lanes will be reserved for faster-moving vehicles such as cars and double-cabin pickups.
Traffic officials believe that controlling lane violations will help create a safer and more organized driving environment. They noted that failure to follow lane assignments often contributes to traffic jams and dangerous driving conditions.
The new system relies entirely on camera-based monitoring. Once a violation is detected, an e-challan will be generated automatically and issued to the vehicle owner. This process aims to ensure transparency and consistent enforcement of traffic regulations.
Authorities have also announced penalties for those involved in lane violations. Motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers found violating lane rules will face fines of Rs2,500. Bus operators who break the regulations will be fined Rs7,500.
Traffic police officials said Sharea Faisal was selected for the initial rollout because the necessary surveillance infrastructure is already in place. If the project proves successful, similar systems could be introduced on other major roads in Karachi.
Officials are encouraging motorists to cooperate with the new policy and drive responsibly. They believe strict enforcement of lane discipline will improve road safety and make daily travel smoother for thousands of commuters.
The launch of the e-challan system marks a significant step toward modern traffic management in Karachi, with authorities hoping it will reduce lane violations and promote better driving habits across the city.
