AJK Government Imposes Ban On JKJAAC Amid Security Concerns

AJK Government Imposes Ban On JKJAAC Amid Security Concerns

Authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have imposed a ban on the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), a move that has sparked debate across the region.

According to an official notification, the organization has been placed in the First Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2014. The decision also covers associated names, including Jammu Kashmir Action Committee and Joint Awami Action Committee.

The ban was approved by the President of AJK and took immediate effect. Under the decision, any support, affiliation, or activity linked to the organization may now be considered a legal offense.

Government officials said the ban followed intelligence reports suggesting the group was involved in activities that threatened public peace and security. Authorities claim the organization contributed to unrest, intimidation, and disruption of law and order.

The JKJAAC emerged as a major grassroots movement in 2023. It gained support during a period of rising electricity bills, inflation, and economic hardship. Traders, students, transporters, lawyers, and civil society groups joined together under a common platform.

Unlike traditional political parties, the movement operated as a coalition focused on economic relief and governance reforms. It quickly became a powerful voice for citizens demanding lower utility costs and better public services.

The group developed a list of nearly 40 demands. These included cheaper electricity, subsidized wheat and flour, inflation relief, and greater control over local resources. Supporters also called for governance reforms and stronger accountability measures.

By 2024, the movement had expanded its activities through strikes, protests, and long marches. Several districts experienced shutdowns as demonstrations increased pressure on authorities.

Negotiations between the government and protest leaders resulted in subsidy packages and temporary agreements. However, tensions returned when movement leaders accused authorities of failing to implement promised reforms.

In late 2025, large-scale protests once again disrupted normal life in parts of Azad Kashmir. Clashes and communication disruptions were reported during the unrest.

The latest ban came shortly before another planned protest campaign. Officials defended the action as necessary to maintain stability and public order.

Critics, however, argue that the ban represents a significant escalation in the dispute between authorities and a popular grassroots movement.

Despite the restrictions, there is broad agreement that JKJAAC has become one of the most influential public movements in recent AJK history. Its campaigns have shaped political debate and brought economic issues to the forefront of public discussion.
