Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan is expected to take over as the head coach of the national Test team as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) considers major changes in its red-ball setup.
According to reports, Younis Khan is likely to replace Sarfraz Ahmed, who was appointed as Test head coach in April this year. Sarfrazโs first assignment came during Pakistanโs two-match away Test series against Bangladesh in the ICC World Test Championship.
However, Pakistan struggled during the tour and suffered a 2-0 series defeat. It was the teamโs second consecutive Test series whitewash against Bangladesh. The disappointing results have reportedly prompted PCB officials to review the current leadership structure of the Test side.
Sources suggest that the board is planning significant changes, which may affect both the team captain and the head coach. Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood is also facing uncertainty following the poor performances. Reports indicate that all-rounder Salman Ali Agha is being considered as a possible replacement.
As part of the proposed restructuring, Younis Khan is expected to be given a larger role within Pakistan cricket. Besides becoming the Test head coach, he may also join the national men’s selection committee.
Younis remains one of Pakistanโs most successful cricketers. He captained the national side to victory in the ICC Menโs T20 World Cup in 2009 and is widely respected for his leadership and experience in Test cricket.
Despite the expected changes, Sarfraz Ahmed is not likely to leave the PCB setup completely. Sources say he will continue working with Pakistan Shaheens and contribute to player development programs.
Meanwhile, former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez is also expected to receive a major position. He is reportedly being considered for the role of Director of International Cricket. The position has remained vacant since the suspension of Usman Wahla last year.
Hafeez could also become part of the national selection committee. The current committee includes Aqib Javed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq, and Sarfraz Ahmed.
If approved, the appointments of Younis Khan and Hafeez would mark a significant shift in Pakistan cricketโs management structure. The PCB hopes that experienced former players can help improve the team’s performances and strengthen long-term planning.
