Afghanistan Bans Smartphones for Government Employees

Afghanistan Bans Smartphones for Government Employees

Government employees in Afghanistan have reportedly started turning off their smartphones after a new directive linked to the countryโ€™s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada.

A letter carrying the emblem of the Supreme Court began circulating on social media last week. The document announced a ban on smartphone use for government workers. However, the Supreme Court has not issued any official statement regarding the letter.

According to the reported order, all department heads in different provinces were instructed to inform their employees about the restriction. The directive applies to both senior and junior staff members.

The reported order stated that smartphone use would be strictly prohibited from 17 June. It also mentioned that only the supreme leader could approve exceptions to the rule.

The restriction reportedly covers employees working in both civilian and military departments across Afghanistan. The move has created discussions among government workers and the public.

Despite the reported ban, some government departments continued using digital communication platforms. Several central government offices were still sharing updates through WhatsApp groups on Wednesday afternoon.

Two Afghan government spokespersons were contacted for comments about the reported smartphone restrictions. However, they did not provide any response regarding the matter.

In Ghazni province, located between Kabul and Kandahar, government employees reportedly began disconnecting from their smartphones on Tuesday evening. The action followed the circulation of the reported directive.

The reported decision has drawn attention because smartphones have become an important tool for communication and administration. Government offices often use mobile applications for sharing information and coordinating daily activities.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether the order will be implemented nationwide or whether additional guidelines will be issued. The lack of an official statement has left questions about the scope and enforcement of the reported ban.
