The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) observed Black Day on July 5 to mark the anniversary of the military takeover in 1977. The party organized commemorative events across Sindh, with a central ceremony held at the mausoleum of former Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Larkana.
The main event, titled “Salam Quaid Awam,” was organized by PPP District Larkana. The programme was held to protest against the imposition of martial law on July 5, 1977, and to pay tribute to Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, whom the party remembers as a champion of democracy and the rights of the people.
Senior leaders, local representatives, and party workers participated in the ceremony. They visited the mausoleum of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, laid floral wreaths, and offered Fateha in his memory.
Participants also visited the graves of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and other members of the Bhutto family who are remembered by the party as martyrs. Floral tributes were placed, and prayers were offered to honor their sacrifices and contributions.
Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon described July 5, 1977, as a Black Day in Pakistan’s political history. In his message, he said the events of that day interrupted the democratic process and affected the people’s right to choose their representatives through elections.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said the military takeover had long-term consequences for Pakistan’s politics, society, and national development. According to him, the country’s progress depends on strengthening democratic institutions and respecting constitutional principles.
He said the observance of Black Day also serves as an opportunity to renew the commitment to constitutional supremacy, democratic continuity, and the protection of the public’s right to vote.
The senior minister praised the political struggle of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. He said both leaders played an important role in promoting democracy, defending the Constitution, and protecting the rights of ordinary citizens.
According to Sharjeel Inam Memon, the legacy of the Bhutto family remains an important chapter in Pakistan’s democratic history. He added that their political struggle continues to inspire party workers and supporters across the country.
He also said the lessons of the past highlight the importance of democracy, constitutional governance, and the rule of law. In his view, these principles remain essential for ensuring political stability and sustainable national development.
The PPP leader further stated that the Pakistan Peoples Party has consistently supported democratic values, constitutional governance, and the rights of the people. He said party leaders and workers have made significant sacrifices over the years in pursuit of these goals.
Sharjeel Inam Memon added that the Sindh government would continue working in line with the vision of the PPP leadership by promoting democratic values, improving public services, and strengthening constitutional institutions.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for the country’s peace, stability, and democratic future. Participants reiterated their commitment to democratic continuity and emphasized the importance of preserving constitutional principles for future generations.
