The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has approved Pakistan’s first Stroke Intervention (Level IV) degree program. The new postgraduate program aims to train specialists in advanced Stroke treatment and improve emergency healthcare services across the country.
The decision was made during the 43rd meeting of the UHS Academic Council. The meeting was chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore. Officials said the program is designed to prepare highly skilled professionals in interventional neuroradiology and endovascular stroke management.
The new degree will support Punjab’s expanding network of comprehensive stroke centres. Health experts believe the program will help address the growing need for specialists who can provide advanced care to patients with serious neurological conditions.
Students enrolled in the program will receive training in modern catheter-based procedures. These techniques are commonly used to treat acute ischemic Stroke and other disorders affecting blood vessels in the brain.
The university said the program will focus on practical clinical training alongside academic learning. Graduates will gain the skills needed to perform complex procedures that require specialized medical expertise.
According to Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, the initiative will help strengthen Pakistan’s healthcare system. He said the province is expanding its stroke care services, creating greater demand for trained professionals in this field.
Medical experts consider timely treatment essential for reducing disability caused by stroke. Specialized intervention can restore blood flow to the brain and improve recovery chances for many patients.
The Academic Council also approved several new academic programs during the meeting. These include PhD curricula in nursing, public health, oral biology, and medical education.
In addition, the council reviewed and updated several postgraduate and certificate programs. These revisions aim to improve research quality, clinical education, and professional training for healthcare workers.
The meeting also introduced a new requirement for doctoral students. PhD scholars must now participate in at least three national conferences and one international conference or seminar before completing their degree.
University officials said this requirement will encourage academic collaboration and improve research exposure for students. It is also expected to strengthen the overall quality of higher education in the medical field.
