Body of Boy Lost in 2005 Earthquake Found After 21 Years in Balakot

A heartbreaking discovery has brought closure to a family more than two decades after the devastating Earthquake that struck northern Pakistan in 2005. The remains of a five-year-old boy, who went missing during the disaster, were found during excavation work at his family home in the Balakot area of Azad Kashmir.

According to reports, the child was identified as Jamal Shafiq. He disappeared on October 8, 2005, when the powerful Earthquake caused widespread destruction across the region. His family’s house collapsed during the disaster, and despite extensive rescue and search efforts, they were unable to find him.

After searching for a long time, the family accepted that the child had likely died in the tragedy. Funeral prayers in absentia were offered because his body could not be recovered. Even after many years, however, his parents continued to hope that they would one day learn what had happened to their son.

The remains were discovered unexpectedly while workers were digging the site to build a new house. During the excavation, clothing was found beneath the rubble, helping the family identify the remains as those of Jamal Shafiq.

Jamal’s father said his son had been trapped under the debris when their home collapsed during the Earthquake. At the time of the disaster, rescue teams and family members searched the area, but they were unable to recover his body. The passage of time did not erase the family’s grief, and they continued to remember him over the years.

Following the recovery, the remains were respectfully removed from the site. The family carried out proper funeral rites before burying the child in a nearby cemetery. Relatives and members of the local community joined the family to pay their final respects.

The discovery has ended more than two decades of uncertainty for the family. Although it cannot erase the pain of losing a child, Jamal’s father said recovering his son’s remains finally brought a sense of peace and closure after years of unanswered questions.
