Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced major steps to strengthen Pakistan’s technology sector. He said the country aims to reduce its reliance on foreign technology and build advanced local capabilities. The announcement came during the Indus Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) Expo.
As part of the new Robotics Program, the prime minister launched the Spark and Elevate Program. These initiatives will promote robotics, autonomous systems, and innovation across Pakistan. He also announced the creation of a $20 million Pakistan Venture Fund to support technology startups, research, and innovation.
The prime minister said the Robotics Program will help turn research into commercial products. He added that it will create high-quality jobs and encourage the growth of local technology companies. According to him, Pakistan has the talent and resources to become a leader in advanced technologies.
Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan will no longer depend on foreign technology. Instead, the country will focus on developing its own modern solutions. He noted that Pakistan is steadily improving its capabilities in robotics, autonomous systems, and defense technology.
The prime minister highlighted progress in local defense production. He said military simulators are now fully manufactured within Pakistan. He also shared that more than 60 percent of the drones used by the country’s armed forces are produced locally. He added that advanced technologies and stronger cybersecurity have helped improve national defense capabilities.
Shehbaz Sharif stressed that technology should support more than just defense. He said innovation should also improve agriculture, water management, climate resilience, and opportunities for small businesses. He added that entrepreneurs and farmers should also benefit from technological progress.
He further emphasized the need for an ethical and legal framework for autonomous systems. According to the prime minister, responsible use of emerging technologies is important for long-term development and public trust.
The government believes the Robotics Program will encourage research, attract investment, and support the country’s digital transformation. Officials hope the initiative will strengthen Pakistan’s innovation ecosystem while creating new economic opportunities.
In a separate statement, the prime minister welcomed S&P Global Ratings’ decision to upgrade Pakistan’s sovereign credit rating from B- to B. He described the upgrade as a sign of confidence in the government’s economic reforms, fiscal discipline, and stabilization efforts.
