Ahsan Iqbal asks PPP to adhere to democratic norms as political debate continues after the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. The federal planning minister urged the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to review its political approach instead of making allegations about the election process.
Speaking to reporters in Narowal, Ahsan Iqbal said the PPP should carefully assess its political strategy. He stated that raising claims of election rigging without sufficient public support was not appropriate. According to him, political parties should respect democratic values and the electoral process.
The minister referred to the LA-37 Jammu-4 constituency in Narowal. He claimed that the PPP had only limited voter support in the constituency. He said the party could expect around 200 to 250 votes there. Based on that, he argued that allegations of rigging were not justified.
Ahsan Iqbal asks PPP to adhere to democratic norms by accepting election outcomes in line with democratic traditions. He said mature political leadership should congratulate successful opponents instead of questioning results without evidence.
The minister specifically mentioned PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He said Bilawal, as a senior political leader, should congratulate the PML-N leadership and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif following the election outcome. He added that such gestures strengthen democracy and promote political stability.
Ahsan Iqbal also recalled an earlier political example. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari after his victory in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. He noted that the prime minister also invited him to form the government in accordance with democratic traditions. He urged all political parties to follow similar practices.
The remarks came as political tensions continued over the AJK election results. While the PPP has raised concerns about alleged irregularities, PML-N leaders have rejected those claims. The issue remains part of the ongoing political discussion following the elections.
