Pakistan has saved nearly $12 billion through the growing use of solar energy, according to Senator Sherry Rehman. She shared these figures while speaking at the Solar Storage Flexibility Conference held in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The senator said the country has made strong progress in adopting solar power. She noted that one in every five households in Pakistan now uses solar systems. This shift has helped reduce energy costs and improve access to electricity for many families.
Rehman said Pakistan can strengthen its energy security by expanding battery storage across the country. She explained that better battery systems can store extra electricity and provide power when demand increases. This would also reduce pressure on the national electricity grid.
She added that smart grids and distributed energy resources are also important. These technologies can improve the way electricity is managed and help balance supply and demand more efficiently. As a result, the national grid can become more reliable and stable.
According to the senator, Pakistan could save an additional $6.3 billion this year through the continued growth of solar energy. However, she stressed that affordable financing and investment in modern grid infrastructure are necessary to maintain this progress. These measures would allow more households and businesses to adopt clean energy solutions.
Rehman also said that Pakistan’s electricity challenges are not limited to power generation. She explained that improving grid management is equally important. She called for reforms to address capacity payment issues and ensure that the energy system operates more efficiently.
The senator highlighted the need to increase access to renewable energy for households and small businesses. She said battery storage and distributed energy solutions should become key priorities in future energy planning. These technologies can support a cleaner and more flexible electricity system.
She further noted that Pakistan’s solar transition has been largely driven by market demand and private sector investment. She said stronger financial support and easier access to funding would encourage faster adoption of clean energy technologies across the country.
