President Zardari has approved the appointment of additional judges to several High Courts across Pakistan.
The approval covers the Lahore, Sindh, Peshawar, Islamabad and Balochistan High Courts. The decision follows recommendations made by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
A total of 24 judicial appointments were pending approval. The JCP considered the recommendations during two separate meetings.
The recommendations included three additional judges for the Islamabad High Court. Ten judges were recommended for the Lahore High Court.
The Sindh High Court was recommended to receive three additional judges. Another three judges were proposed for the Balochistan High Court.
The JCP also recommended the confirmation of four additional judges. These judges belong to the Peshawar High Court.
In addition, the commission proposed a six-month extension for an additional Sindh High Court judge.
President Zardari also approved the confirmation of certain additional judges. They will now serve as permanent judges at the Sindh and Lahore High Courts.
The president approved another major judicial decision. Salaries, allowances and pensions of Supreme Court judges will be revised.
These financial benefits will be brought in line with those provided to Federal Constitutional Court judges.
The president also approved amendments to the 1997 order. The order covers leave, pensions and other privileges for High Court judges.
The changes aim to update the rules governing these benefits and facilities.
Separately, the appointment of Haroon Akhtar as Prime Minister’s Adviser was approved. He will serve as Adviser on Industries and Production.
The latest approvals come after concerns over delays in the appointment process.
Earlier, the Islamabad High Court issued notices regarding the delayed approval of a judges’ appointment summary.
The IHC issued notices to the President, Prime Minister and Ministry of Law and Justice. The notices followed a petition challenging the delay.
The court directed the President and Prime Minister to respond through their respective secretaries.
It also sought a response from the Ministry of Law and Justice. The ministry was directed to submit its response by Tuesday.
The latest decision by President Zardari clears the pending judicial appointments. It also confirms several judges as permanent members of the High Courts.
