ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers may face another increase in power bills under the July fuel adjustment. The proposed increase stands at Rs2.52 per unit for one month.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to review the proposed adjustment today. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted the request to the regulator.
The request covers the monthly fuel cost adjustment for July 2026. NEPRA will examine the data before making a final decision.
According to the application, power generation costs remained high during July. Electricity produced from diesel reached around Rs50 per unit.
The cost of generation through imported coal was also significant. The application placed its cost at Rs54.47 per unit.
Meanwhile, electricity generated using imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) cost Rs47.37 per unit. These costs are part of the data submitted for the proposed adjustment.
NEPRA will review the figures during the hearing. It will then decide whether the requested tariff increase should be approved.
If approved, the increase could add to the monthly financial pressure on consumers. The impact would depend on the final decision and applicable billing rules.
The proposed adjustment comes after several recent changes in power tariffs. NEPRA approved an earlier increase of Rs0.75 per unit on August 7.
That increase was approved under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism. It was related to the June 2026 adjustment.
The approved increase also applied to consumers of K-Electric. The revised rates were scheduled to appear in electricity bills issued during August.
The CPPA had initially requested a higher increase for the June adjustment. It had sought an increase of Rs1.20 per unit.
NEPRA later approved a lower increase of Rs0.75 per unit. The decision followed a review of the power generation data and related costs.
The latest proposed increase also follows an earlier adjustment. NEPRA had approved a Rs0.34 per unit increase under the May monthly adjustment.
Fuel cost adjustments are reviewed regularly by NEPRA. They reflect changes in the cost of electricity generation and related power purchases.
Consumers will know the final impact after NEPRA announces its decision. The regulator will issue its decision after reviewing the CPPA’s application and supporting data.
For now, the proposed Rs2.52 per unit increase remains subject to regulatory approval. No final increase will take effect until NEPRA completes the review.
