US and Sri Lanka Seize 463kg Crystal Meth in Joint Operation

US and Sri Lankan authorities have seized around 463 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in a joint operation.

The operation targeted a Pakistan-based drug trafficking network, according to the US Embassy in Sri Lanka.

The embassy issued the statement on September 2. Officials said the drugs were seized following intelligence about suspicious maritime shipments.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) New Delhi Country Office worked with Sri Lankaโ€™s Police Narcotics Bureau.

The agencies investigated containers reportedly shipped from Pakistan to Colombo. The intelligence was developed between August 14 and 29.

The DEAโ€™s Foreign Counterparts Unit worked with Pakistanโ€™s Anti-Narcotics Force Special Investigations Cell.

The intelligence indicated that the containers could be linked to illegal drug trafficking. Sri Lankan authorities then moved to intercept the shipment.

Officials discovered approximately 463 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine. The drugs were reportedly worth around $21 million.

Authorities said the narcotics were hidden inside bath towels. The concealment was reportedly intended to help move the drugs through international shipping channels.

Several suspects were arrested during the operation. The US Embassy said some of those detained were Pakistani nationals.

Authorities believe the shipment was being transported through Sri Lanka. The drugs were allegedly intended for distribution in international markets.

The operation focused on disrupting a Pakistan-based narcotrafficking network. Officials said the investigation targeted wider transnational criminal activity.

The US described the seizure as part of efforts against international drug trafficking organizations. Such networks operate across multiple countries and use complex supply routes.

The US has also supported Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies through training and technical assistance.

This support has been provided through the US Department of Stateโ€™s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

The assistance has included cooperation with Sri Lankan police and customs authorities. It aims to strengthen efforts against international narcotics trafficking.

The latest seizure highlights continued cooperation between regional law enforcement agencies.

The US said it remains committed to working with Sri Lanka and other regional partners.

Officials said the cooperation aims to disrupt transnational criminal organizations. It also seeks to reduce profits generated through illegal drug trafficking.

The US further stressed the need to address the broader threat posed by narcotrafficking.

Authorities are expected to continue investigating the seized shipment and the suspects involved.

The operation demonstrates the role of intelligence sharing in disrupting international drug networks.
