WARSAW, Poland: A Russian drone carrying explosives has been found in the sea off northern Poland. Officials confirmed the discovery on Wednesday.

The aircraft was identified as a Russian Gerbera-2 drone. It was recovered near the village of Rusinowo in northwestern Poland.

Military affairs prosecutor Bartosz Okoniewski said the aircraft was found on Monday. Authorities secured the drone and examined it after recovery.

Officials later confirmed that the aircraft was armed. According to Okoniewski, it contained a warhead and a detonator.

He did not provide additional details about the explosive device. The recovered aircraft will now undergo further examination by the military.

Investigators will try to determine the drone’s origin and its intended destination. They will also examine how it reached the waters near Poland.

Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz previously confirmed the recovery. He said the military had located the aircraft near Rusinowo.

The minister said the drone may have been lost during Russian test manoeuvres. Those activities were reportedly taking place over the Baltic Sea.

The military affairs department of the Szczecin district prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Okoniewski said investigators suspect an offence involving serious public safety risks. The case concerns an incident that could endanger many people.

It also covers potential risks to property of significant value. Further technical examination is expected to provide more information.

The discovery comes amid continued security concerns involving unmanned aircraft. Poland has reported several drone incursions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Poland is a member of both NATO and the European Union. It shares borders with Ukraine and Russia’s Kaliningrad region.

The country has remained particularly alert to aerial activity in the region. The latest drone discovery adds to those ongoing security concerns.

Authorities have not confirmed that the aircraft was deliberately sent toward Poland. The investigation will determine the circumstances behind its arrival.

The military examination is expected to establish more details about the aircraft. Officials will also seek to identify its exact route and purpose.
