KARACHI: Karachi University is set to operate under an interim leadership arrangement during the 2027 admissions process.
The development comes as its acting head prepares for a 20-day foreign visit. The visit will begin during an important phase of the university’s academic calendar.
NED University Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Tufail Ahmed currently holds additional charge of Karachi University. He was given the responsibility during the last week of July.
Dr. Tufail is scheduled to travel to the United States, Canada, and Sri Lanka. His visit is planned for academic engagements in these countries.
During his absence, Professor Dr. Haris Shoaib will handle the university’s daily affairs. Dr. Shoaib is the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Officials from the University of Karachi Registrar’s Office confirmed that permission has been issued for Dr. Tufail’s foreign travel.
NED University will also have an interim arrangement during his absence. Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Noman Ahmed has been assigned temporary responsibility there.
The latest foreign trip will be Dr. Tufail’s second overseas academic visit in about two months. His absence comes as Karachi University continues preparations for the new academic session.
The university has around 46,000 students. It currently does not have a permanent vice chancellor.
The Sindh government has yet to appoint a permanent head for the university. A summary containing three candidates has already reached the Chief Minister’s House.
However, no further progress has been reported regarding the appointment. The university will therefore continue with temporary leadership during the current period.
The timing of the leadership change is significant because admissions for the 2027 academic session are underway.
Thousands of candidates are expected to take entry tests for different academic disciplines. The tests are scheduled for October 11.
Open-merit admissions are also expected to begin on the same day. The process will involve applicants seeking admission to various university programs.
During Dr. Tufail’s absence, routine administrative matters will be handled by Dr. Shoaib. He will oversee the university’s day-to-day affairs during the interim period.
Entry tests are among the major annual academic activities at the university. They require coordination between different departments and administrative offices.
The temporary leadership arrangement comes at a key point in the admissions calendar. It will place senior administrative responsibilities with the acting dean.
The development also highlights the ongoing wait for a permanent vice chancellor at Karachi University. The final appointment remains pending with the Sindh government.
For now, the university is expected to continue its admissions and academic activities under the temporary arrangement.
Students and applicants are advised to follow official university announcements. These updates will provide information about admissions, entry tests, and other academic matters.
