WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new Android feature that could allow users to read incoming messages without opening conversations or triggering blue ticks.

The upcoming feature will introduce a chat preview option, giving users access to recent messages directly from the chat list.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature has been identified in WhatsApp’s Android beta development. It is designed to let users check conversations without marking messages as read.

The feature could be particularly useful for people who want to review messages but cannot respond immediately.

WhatsApp currently allows users to manage read receipts through its privacy settings. However, the new option could provide more flexibility by allowing users to preview individual conversations without opening them.

The feature is expected to work through a contextual menu that appears when users press and hold a conversation in the chat list.

A preview card will appear above the menu, displaying recent messages from the selected conversation.

This will allow users to read incoming messages without entering the chat window. Reports also suggest that the Android version will support scrolling, allowing users to review older messages within the preview.

One of the main benefits of the feature is that viewing messages through the preview will not trigger read receipts.

Normally, blue ticks appear when a recipient opens and reads a message, provided read receipts are enabled. With the proposed preview system, messages will remain unread when viewed through the new interface.

Read receipts are expected to work normally when users open the conversation directly.

The feature could help users check important messages without immediately notifying the sender that they have read them.

The contextual menu is also expected to include several conversation management tools.

Reported options include pinning chats, archiving conversations, marking messages as read or unread, and deleting chats. Additional controls may allow users to lock conversations, add chats to lists, view chat information and create home screen shortcuts.

These options could make it easier to manage conversations without repeatedly opening individual chats.

WhatsApp already offers a similar chat preview experience on iPhones. However, the reported Android version could provide an additional advantage through its scrollable preview window.

The development could bring a more convenient message management experience to Android users.

The feature remains under development and is not yet available to public beta testers. WhatsApp has not announced an official release date or confirmed when it will reach the stable Android application.

There is also no confirmed timeline for its wider availability on iOS.

As development continues, the final design and available options may change before a public release.
