Asif Zardari: Country Progressing Towards Transparent Elections

Asif Zardari, co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has expressed confidence that Pakistan is moving towards transparent elections, terming the current environment as “favourable” for the polls. He also expressed trust in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure fair and transparent conduct of the elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.

Zardari emphasized that the PPP is fully prepared to compete in the general elections and asserted the party’s ability to fight in any environment. He declared the PPP as the only party with the capacity to navigate elections under various circumstances and expressed certainty that the party would emerge as the majority winner on February 8.

However, Zardari’s statements come amid concerns from major political parties, including PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), about a lack of a level playing field in the lead-up to the elections. Both parties have raised reservations about the fairness and transparency of the upcoming polls.

The Supreme Court, on November 3, ordered the government to ensure the conduct of general elections on February 8, following a unanimous agreement between President Arif Alvi and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja during a meeting at the President’s House. The court’s orders were issued in response to multiple pleas seeking timely elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the assemblies.
