In Islamabad, the federal government has given approval for the export of flour, albeit with a stipulation that it must be derived from imported wheat, as revealed on Thursday. A notification released by the commerce ministry disclosed the amendment to the Export Policy Order 2022 to facilitate this decision. According to sources within the commerce ministry, the country currently boasts satisfactory and ample reserves of wheat. Moreover, this year’s wheat cultivation has surpassed the designated target by 1.8%.

Furthermore, it was indicated that the targeted wheat production of 32.1 million tonnes for this year would be met. Recent developments in the wheat market saw a significant decline in the price of imported wheat following a sharp reduction in purchases by flour mills in Punjab, largely due to the availability of cheaper wheat grown in Sindh. Consequently, the price of imported wheat saw a decrease of Rs160 per maund, while domestically produced wheat experienced a Rs400 per maund reduction.
Amidst these developments, farmer organizations have urged the federal government not to extend the deadline for ships carrying imported wheat to arrive for the third time, with the current deadline set for March 31.
