South Korea Employs AI For Finding Perfect Foundation Shades

South Korea cosmetics giant AmorePacific has introduced an AI beauty lab where customers can book sessions to receive custom-mixed face products by robots and get recommendations on ideal lipstick colors using advanced technology.

According to 32-year-old customer Kwon You-jin, who tried the bespoke skin cosmetics service, many people typically buy common colors available, but personalized AI recommendations based on her skin data provided a valuable experience. After receiving an AI-generated skin analysis report, a robot mixed a foundation that perfectly matched her skin tone.

The trend of using AI in cosmetics is growing, with major global brands like L’Oréal S.A. and Sephora also using it to tailor products to individual customer needs. AmorePacific utilizes AI to recommend the best matches from a wide range of skin foundations and lip colors.

Engineer Lee Young-jin from AmorePacific explained that deep learning and machine learning techniques automate the process of analyzing skin data, previously done manually by experts. This approach can accelerate product development and minimize variations compared to human consultants.

Analysts, including Yang Yong Suk from South Korea’s ETRI, highlighted that AI adoption can expedite product launches and enhance accuracy in cosmetic evaluations, anticipating significant growth in AI-driven beauty solutions over the coming years.

The market for AI applications in beauty and cosmetics is expected to expand from $3.27 billion in 2023 to $8.1 billion by 2028, driven by advancements in personalized beauty recommendations and virtual makeup tools.
