ICC Faces Huge Losses Hosting T20 World Cup 2024 in USA

T20 World Cup 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) reportedly incurred losses of around USD 20 million from hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 matches in the United States, according to media reports on Thursday.

This significant financial setback is expected to be a major discussion point during the ICC Annual Conference starting Friday in Colombo. Although not formally listed in the nine-point agenda of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the issue will be addressed in a “post-event report.”

The losses are attributed to various factors related to hosting part of the tournament in the USA, including the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match in New York.

Another key topic at the AGM is the potential replacement of current ICC chairman Greg Barclay by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. An ICC source indicated significant interest in Shah’s future leadership of the ICC.

The source suggested that Shah could assume the ICC chairmanship in 2025, during his cooling-off period from the BCCI, which starts in 2025 as per the constitution. This would involve changing the ICC chairmanship term from three two-year terms to two three-year terms, maintaining a total term of six years.

This adjustment would allow Shah to complete his tenure as BCCI secretary and become ICC chairman in 2025 for a three-year term, then potentially return as BCCI president in 2028.
