Over 6,000 Educated Prisoners Released in Punjab Amid Delays in Sentence Reduction Process

In Punjab, more than 6,000 prisoners have been released in the last five years after completing their education.

However, the Punjab Interior Department’s spokesperson expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of Education Remission Committee meetings.

The committee, which plays a crucial role in granting sentence reductions to educated inmates, is required to meet monthly, but it has not convened for two months, leading to delays in the release process.

Typically, inmates who complete matriculation, intermediate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees receive sentence reductions.

Prisoners who complete Quran translation or memorization can have their sentences reduced by six months to two years, while vocational training provides a one-month reduction.
