The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a significant expansion of Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, increasing its seating capacity from 21,000 to 34,000 in preparation for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Jawaid Qazi Ahmed, the PCB’s Director of Infrastructure, shared that the construction project, costing an estimated Rs7.5 billion, is expected to be completed by December 31, 2024. This expansion aims to enhance the viewing experience by bringing enclosures closer to the pitch and improving sightlines.
The renovations are part of a broader Rs12.8 billion investment across three major cricket venues in Pakistan, including National Bank Stadium in Karachi and Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi. At Gaddafi Stadium, the plan includes steel-structured enclosures, upgraded drainage systems, new digital screens, and the replacement of outdated floodlights with modern LED systems.

Lahore will host seven matches, including the final, while Karachi and Rawalpindi will also host key matches, such as the opening match and semi-finals. The ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled from February 19 to March 9, 2025, will be a major test for these upgraded facilities. The tournament features Pakistan in Group A, alongside India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still awaiting government clearance for India’s participation in matches held in Pakistan.
These renovations will elevate Gaddafi Stadium’s status as a world-class venue, enhancing the overall experience for players and fans during the tournament.
