Drug Addiction Crisis Escalates in Pakistan with Over 10 Million Affected, UNODC Reports

A recent report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reveals a growing drug addiction crisis in Pakistan, impacting over 10 million people.

Among these, 6.7 million are active drug users, with more than 800,000 regularly using heroin. Pakistan’s annual processed heroin consumption reaches an alarming 44 tons, significantly surpassing the rate in the United States.

The UNODC attributes the crisis to low drug costs and easy availability, driving many individuals to use substances as an escape from life’s challenges.

This surge in addiction rates calls for urgent action and highlights the need for comprehensive strategies focused on prevention, treatment, and community support.

Experts emphasize that bolstering awareness, launching effective intervention programs, and providing resources for rehabilitation are critical steps to combat this escalating issue.

Through dedicated efforts, Pakistan aims to support affected individuals and foster healthier communities nationwide.
