NFAK’s ‘Chain of Light’ Tops The Guardian’s 2024 Album List

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s posthumous album Chain of Light has claimed the number 1 spot on The Guardian’s list of top global albums for 2024. Released on September 20, the album features four tracks recorded in April 1990, offering a powerful 41-minute listening experience.

Reviewer Ammar Kalia lauded Chain of Light as a “remarkable discovery,” praising it for avoiding the common pitfalls of posthumous releases. The standout track, Ya Gaus Ya Meeran, spans nine minutes of shifting rhythms and demonstrates Nusrat’s unparalleled vocal artistry, cementing his legacy as one of music’s greatest voices.

Also featured on the list is Arooj Aftab’s Night Reign, which ranked sixth. Released on May 31, the Grammy winner’s nine-track album blends jazz and dance, with Kalia commending Aftab’s voice for anchoring the compositions inspired by nocturnal themes.

The Guardian’s list also included works by Mongolian singer Enji, South African musician Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O, Indian vocalist Ganavya, and others, reflecting a diverse range of global musical talent.
