Power Consumers to Get Relief of Rs0.63Unit

Electricity consumers in Pakistan are set to benefit from a tariff reduction of Rs0.63 per unit, thanks to the monthly fuel adjustment for November 2024. The Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee (CPPA-G) had proposed a decrease in electricity rates, reflecting a drop in the actual cost of power generation. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) will hold a public hearing on December 31, 2024, to finalize this reduction.

For November 2024, the CPPA-G reported that the reference fuel charge was Rs7.8609 per unit, while the actual generation cost was lower, at Rs7.2274 per unit. This adjustment is expected to offer significant relief to consumers.

A breakdown of the energy generation sources shows that hydel power contributed 35.61% of the total electricity generation. Coal played a significant role, with local coal generating 1,019 GWh (12.68%) at a cost of Rs14.36 per kWh, and imported coal contributing 477 GWh (5.94%) at a slightly higher cost of Rs14.92 per kWh.

Natural gas and RLNG also had notable shares, with local gas contributing 826 GWh (10.68%) at Rs13.44 per kWh, and RLNG adding 907 GWh (11.29%) at a cost of Rs23.2 per kWh. Nuclear energy, being one of the most cost-efficient sources, generated 1,655 GWh (20.61%) at a low cost of Rs1.73 per kWh.

Other contributors included imported electricity from Iran, wind energy, solar energy, and bagasse.
