Gilgit-Baltistan Set for Historic Local Bodies Elections After 20-Year Gap

Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan has officially announced the schedule for long-awaited local government Elections, bringing a major democratic process back to the region after nearly 20 years.

According to the election schedule, polling will take place on August 2, 2026. The announcement marks an important step toward restoring local governance and strengthening grassroots democracy across Gilgit-Baltistan.

The electoral process will begin with the submission of nomination papers. Candidates interested in contesting the Elections can submit their nomination documents from June 9 to June 15.

Election authorities stated that the preliminary list of candidates will be released on June 16. Following this, scrutiny of nomination papers will be carried out between June 17 and June 22 to verify eligibility and documentation.

The commission has also allocated time for appeals. Candidates will be able to challenge decisions related to nomination papers, with appeals scheduled to be heard and decided between June 28 and July 4.

After the appeal process is completed, a revised list of candidates will be published on July 6. Candidates who wish to withdraw from the contest will have until July 7 to do so.

Election symbols will be allotted on July 8, allowing candidates to begin their formal campaigns ahead of polling day. Officials confirmed that the same election schedule will apply to women’s reserved seats, ensuring their participation in the democratic process.

The announcement has been welcomed by many observers who view the return of local government Elections as a significant development for the region. Local governance institutions in Gilgit-Baltistan have remained largely inactive for nearly two decades, limiting community-level representation and decision-making.

Experts believe that local bodies play an important role in addressing public issues, improving service delivery, and strengthening communication between citizens and government institutions. The revival of local governments is expected to provide communities with greater involvement in development and administrative matters.

Political analysts say the upcoming Elections could help improve democratic participation and encourage broader public engagement across Gilgit-Baltistan. The process is also expected to provide opportunities for new local leadership to emerge.

With the schedule now officially announced, political groups, independent candidates, and voters are preparing for a crucial electoral process that many residents have been waiting years to see.
