Karachi’s Sea view closed completely as cyclone “biparjoy” just 600km away

Cyclone biparjoy closes to Karachi

Authorities in Pakistan have begun evacuations as the extremely severe cyclonic storm (ESCS) “Biparjoy” approaches Karachi.

During the last six hours, the cyclone over the Arabian Sea moved nearly northward at a speed of 08 kmph and was centred near latitude 19.6°N and longitude 67.6°E, about 310 km southwest of Porbandar (India) and nearly 600 km south of Karachi (Pakistan).

Possible impacts on Pakistan’s Coastel areas:

  • With its expected approach to the southeast Sindh coast, extensive wind-dust/thunderstorm rain with some very heavy/extremely heavy falls and squally winds of 80-100 km/h are expected in the districts of Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparker, and Umerkot from June 13 to June 17.
  • Dust/thunderstorm-rain with a few heavy falls and squally winds of 60-80 km/h are expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allayar, and Mirpurkhas districts from June 13/14 to June 16.
  • Squally (strong) winds may damage loose and susceptible constructions (Kutcha homes).
  • Storm surges of 3-3.5 metres (8-12 feet) are likely at landfall (Keti Bandar and surrounding areas).
  • Fishermen are warned not to travel into the open sea until the system has passed by 17 June, as the Arabian Sea conditions may become quite rough/high, with high tides along the coast.
