Lawyers Rally Against 26th Amendment in Islamabad; Red Zone Sealed, Metro Service Halted

Islamabad witnessed a massive demonstration by lawyers opposing the 26th Constitutional Amendment and the scheduled Judicial Commission meeting. Organized by the National Action Committee, the protest drew legal professionals from Sindh and other regions, gathering outside a private hotel in the capital.

Chanting slogans against the amendment, the lawyers strongly condemned it, asserting that it undermines the judiciary and the state of Pakistan. The protesters attempted to march from the hotel to the Supreme Court building, forming a rally as they moved towards Express Chowk on Embassy Road.

Road Closures and Security Measures:
Key routes, including Serena Chowk, Nadra Chowk, Marriott, and D-Chowk, were completely sealed off, along with the road leading from the Bari Imam shrine. However, authorities allowed one access point into the Red Zone via Margalla Road for Islamabad Secretariat employees.

To maintain order, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration imposed Section 144, restricting public gatherings.

Senior lawyer Munir A. Malik criticized the roadblocks, stating, “All routes have been blocked to stop our protest. This amendment directly threatens the judiciary and the constitution of Pakistan. We have fought for constitutional rights before and will continue our struggle.”

As tensions remain high, lawyers continue their protest, vowing to resist any action they believe weakens judicial independence.
